The Monarch Mobility Carbon Flyer is an exceptionally lightweight folding powerchair built around a carbon fibre frame. At just 11 kg without the battery and 12.6 kg complete with the battery, its biggest advantage is straightforward: it is considerably easier to lift and transport than most conventional powered wheelchairs.

It folds manually to approximately 73 × 32 × 68 cm, making it particularly appealing if you regularly put your powerchair into a car boot, have limited storage space at home or want something manageable for holidays and days out.

Despite its low weight, the Carbon Flyer has twin 250W motors, a maximum speed of 4 mph and a manufacturer-quoted range of up to 9 miles from its 10Ah lithium battery. It has a 42 cm wide by 40 cm deep seat, adjustable armrests and footrests and simple joystick control.

The Carbon Flyer is therefore best thought of as a lightweight travel and everyday powerchair, rather than a replacement for a larger, more substantial powered wheelchair. Its strengths are portability, compactness and ease of handling. The compromises are a relatively modest maximum user weight of 16 stone / 101 kg, no suspension, a fairly compact seat and a range designed more around days out and shorter journeys than long-distance outdoor use.

For somebody looking for a folding electric wheelchair that can regularly travel in the car without becoming a wrestling match every time it needs to go into the boot, the Carbon Flyer is a particularly interesting option.

Why the 11 kg weight matters

There are plenty of folding powerchairs that can technically be transported in a car. The more important question is whether the person actually loading it can comfortably do so.

This is where the Carbon Flyer makes its strongest case. Removing the lithium battery brings the chair itself down to just 11 kg. For comparison, many folding powered wheelchairs weigh well into the teens or twenties of kilograms.

We would still recommend physically trying the lifting process before buying. An 11 kg powerchair is remarkably light, but its shape and the height of your car boot can be just as important as the number on the scales. At a Lumen Mobility demonstration we can look at the chair alongside the vehicle it will actually be transported in rather than simply assuming that “lightweight” means easy for everybody.

How realistic is the 9-mile range?

Monarch quotes a maximum range of up to 9 miles per charge, with the manufacturer itself noting that range is affected by user weight and terrain.

We would treat nine miles as a maximum test figure rather than a distance to routinely plan around. Hills, colder weather, rougher ground, repeated stopping and starting and the weight being carried can all increase energy consumption.

For the sort of use the Carbon Flyer is particularly good at – shopping centres, garden centres, days out, Eastbourne seafront or moving between the car and a destination – the battery capacity makes sense. If you routinely want to travel several miles from home entirely under power, we would probably discuss a larger powerchair with you as well.

Our advice is also to avoid deliberately running a lithium battery completely flat. Regular charging and leaving yourself a sensible reserve is much better than trying to extract every last advertised mile.

Easy to fold and transport

The Carbon Flyer folds manually rather than using an electric folding mechanism. Once folded, its width reduces to approximately 32 cm.

The battery can be removed separately, which has the useful additional benefit of reducing the part you need to lift into the vehicle to 11 kg.

That combination makes the Carbon Flyer particularly suitable for people who travel regularly with family. It can also be a useful option where a son, daughter or partner is likely to be the person loading and unloading the chair.

One point we always encourage customers to consider is what happens at the other end of the journey. Check not only that the powerchair fits into your boot, but that you can remove it, unfold it and install the battery comfortably and safely.

Where we think the Carbon Flyer works best

The Carbon Flyer has relatively small front wheels and does not have suspension. We would therefore predominantly choose it for smooth, reasonably firm surfaces rather than rough outdoor terrain.

Indoors, shops, paved attractions, promenades and maintained paths are much more its territory than rutted tracks, deep gravel or heavily broken pavements.

That distinction matters. Carbon fibre can make a chair extraordinarily light, but it doesn't turn a lightweight folding chair into an outdoor powerchair. If your priority is tackling difficult ground around the South Downs or regularly travelling over rough rural paths in East Sussex, we would recommend looking at something more substantial.

If your priority is getting a powerchair in and out of the car easily for a trip into Eastbourne, Lewes, Hastings or further afield, the Carbon Flyer starts to make considerably more sense.

Comfort and seating

The Carbon Flyer has a 42 cm wide and 40 cm deep seat, together with adjustable armrests and footrests.

For occasional and general-purpose use this provides a compact, straightforward seating arrangement. However, people who spend most of their day in their wheelchair, require pressure management or need significant postural support should not choose a chair purely because it is lightweight.

We would want to make sure the seat dimensions and support are appropriate first. In some cases, a heavier but more configurable powerchair is the better long-term choice.

Travelling with the lithium battery

Monarch describes the Carbon Flyer as suitable for air, coach and cruise travel, but this shouldn't be interpreted as automatic acceptance by every airline or travel company.

For air travel in particular, the UK Civil Aviation Authority recommends contacting your airline in advance and providing the make and model of the powerchair, its dimensions and weight, the battery type and details of how the battery is isolated or removed.

We recommend keeping the battery information and powerchair instructions with your travel documents. Airline requirements can differ, so always obtain approval for your particular journey rather than relying solely on an “airline friendly” description.

As with any lithium mobility battery, only use the correct charger, avoid using a battery that is damaged, swollen or has suffered a significant impact, and ask us for advice if you have any concerns about its condition.

Our view of the Monarch Carbon Flyer

There is a lot to like about the Carbon Flyer, but the 11 kg lifting weight is the real reason to buy it.

There are larger powerchairs with longer ranges, more sophisticated seating and better ability over rough ground. There are also folding chairs with higher maximum user weights. But achieving a complete powered mobility solution weighing only 12.6 kg is genuinely useful if transportation is your biggest difficulty.

We think it makes particular sense as a car-based powerchair: drive to where you want to go, lift a genuinely lightweight chair from the boot and then have powered mobility when you arrive.

The relatively small seat, 16-stone user limit, lack of suspension and 9-mile maximum range mean it won't suit everyone. That is why we would rather demonstrate it alongside alternatives and establish whether its exceptional portability is actually the feature you need.
