The Volthorse is a new British-built all-terrain mobility scooter designed for people who want to go far beyond pavements and shopping centres. Built for woodland, fields, tracks, steep hills and long outdoor journeys, it combines exceptional power with a rugged chassis, substantial suspension and huge off-road tyres.

Final production figures are still being ratified, but current estimates suggest a 2,000W motor with peak power of around 4,000W, together with a maximum range of up to 50 miles. Our demonstrator also features low and high-beam lighting, a fully waterproof dashboard, an adjustable seat rake and reclining backrest. Road-pattern tyres are available for users who expect to spend more time on tarmac.

More importantly, we have already put the Volthorse through some fairly serious real-world testing ourselves.

On our private woodland test trail it felt remarkably stable and controlled, even across rough ground at speed. We then took it to the steepest part of the course, known in-house as “Outback Hill” after the Quantum Outback 4x4 powerchair that had previously set our benchmark for hill climbing. The Volthorse climbed it considerably more convincingly.

And, purely as a controlled test of its low-speed pulling power, we even used it to pull our Ford Transit Custom from stationary. We certainly don’t recommend trying that at home, but it demonstrated just how much torque appears to be available.

The Volthorse won’t be the right scooter for everyone. It is a large, serious machine and is considerably more at home on a country trail than manoeuvring around a small shop.

But for someone looking for a rugged mobility scooter for demanding terrain, rural living, estates, woodland or genuine outdoor adventures, it is one of the most exciting new products we have tested in a long time.
