Altoo Car Boot Hoist
A simpler way to lift a wheelchair into your car
Lifting a wheelchair into a car boot is one of those things that often starts off manageable and gradually becomes a problem. We see it all the time. What begins as a quick lift turns into something that causes hesitation — or worse, back pain.
The Altoo Boot Hoist by Acekare is designed to remove that strain completely. It’s a powered hoist that sits inside your car boot and lifts a wheelchair in for you, without the need for manual handling.
What makes it different to most hoists is that it doesn’t require any permanent modification to the vehicle. There’s no drilling, no wiring into the car, and no commitment to a fixed installation. It uses existing anchor points inside the boot and can be removed or transferred if your situation changes.
For many people, that flexibility is the main reason it stands out.
A practical solution for real-world use
In day-to-day terms, the Altoo is designed to make a repetitive task easier and safer.
You attach the lifting straps to the wheelchair, press a button, and the hoist does the work. The chair is lifted in a controlled, stable motion and can then be guided into the boot before being lowered into place.
There’s no need to physically lift the weight of the chair, and importantly, no awkward twisting or reaching into the boot — which is where most strain tends to come from.
The movement itself is smooth and predictable, keeping the chair level as it lifts rather than allowing it to swing.
Once installed, the hoist stays in position, so you’re not assembling or dismantling anything between uses.
Who this tends to work well for
In our experience, this type of hoist suits a fairly specific group of people. It works particularly well if you’re dealing with:
- A folding powered wheelchair under 60 kg
- A manual chair that’s becoming harder to lift repeatedly
- A situation where a partner or family member is doing the lifting
It’s also a good fit if you’re not ready to commit to a permanent hoist installation, or if you expect your vehicle to change in the future.
Where it becomes less suitable is with heavier powerchairs or anything that doesn’t fold down compactly enough to fit your boot. The weight limit is 60 kg, and that’s not something you can stretch.
Does it work in every car?
No - this isn’t a “fits all cars” solution unfortunately. Acekare have a vehicle checker which we can use to check compatibility. We're hoping to make it possible to check your vehicle right here within our website in the near future.
Whether your car works with the Altoo comes down to a combination of:
- Boot size and shape
- Available anchor points
- The size and weight of your wheelchair
Before recommending anything, we would always look at your specific setup and make sure it actually works in practice — not just on paper.
No drilling, no permanent changes
This is where the Altoo hoist really separates itself from traditional hoists. Most vehicle hoists are fixed in place. They’re bolted into the car and effectively become part of it. That’s fine if you know you’ll keep the vehicle long-term, but it can be limiting.
The Altoo is different. It installs using existing fixing points like Isofix or seatbelt anchorages, sits securely in the boot, and can be removed again if needed.
In practical terms:
- It can be taken out in around 10 minutes
- It can move with you to another compatible vehicle
- It doesn’t permanently alter the car
For a lot of people, that flexibility is a big advantage.
Battery and charging in real use
The hoist is powered by a dedicated 24V lithium battery, which gives more than 200 lifting cycles before needing to be recharged. In reality, that means you’re not constantly thinking about charging it. For most users, it becomes part of a routine rather than a daily task. Like any lithium battery, there are some common-sense precautions:
- Avoid leaving it in very hot or very cold environments
- Use the supplied charger
- Store it indoors if it’s not being used regularly
We go through all of that properly during setup so there are no surprises.
Our honest view
There are plenty of hoists on the market, but most fall into two categories: fixed, heavy-duty systems or very basic portable lifts. The Altoo sits somewhere in between.
It’s more capable than the lightweight portable options, but without tying you into a permanent installation. That makes it particularly useful for people who want something practical and adaptable rather than committing to a full vehicle conversion.
That said, it won’t suit everyone. The weight limit is a genuine limitation, and the space in your boot still matters. Where it does fit, though, it solves a very real problem in a straightforward way.
